Welcome to the ESLAV website

“Adequate veterinary care is essential to the health and well being of animals used for research and other scientific purposes” ETS 123

The forces that led to the formation of ESLAV (European Society for Laboratory Animal Veterinarians) and lead our way at present, are the requirements of the public as well as organizations to be able to address veterinary specialists in the field of humane care and use of laboratory animals, and the requirement of these experts to discuss common subjects, to pool their resources to provide specialized service functions and professional expertise, and to be represented at a European level when decisions are made regarding laboratory animal use and welfare.

It is clear that much work lies ahead of us. Yet the request for expert veterinary participation in reaching decisions concerning laboratory animal medicine and welfare at different European and national levels is most encouraging.

In it’s 11 years of activity, ESLAV has proved itself to be a leading voice in European Laboratory Animal Medicine. The Governing Board of ESLAV looks forward to the participation of interested individuals in making this Society the organized source of expertise it should be.

The European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV) gives veterinarians a forum to discuss issues which concern them, in the field of laboratory animal science, in general and in Europe specifically.
The society’s objectives are to promote and disseminate expert veterinary knowledge within the field of laboratory animal science. This is achieved through:

  • Meetings, lectures, discussions, and publications;
  • The advancement of veterinary knowledge and skills in subjects connected with the breeding, health, welfare and use of laboratory animals;
  • Collaboration and exchange of information with other Societies and allied scientific disciplines;
  • Active encouragement of its Members to provide training for veterinarians practicing or wishing to practice in the field of laboratory animals, both at the under- and postgraduate level.

Ethical Charter

  • The European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV) is committed to the promotion of the highest standards of veterinary conduct among its members.
  • ESLAV will promote a commitment to the use of animals only where there is reasonable expectation that the results will contribute to increasing the body of basic scientific knowledge, or to the protection and/or improvement of animal and human health and safety.
  • To date alternatives to animal do not presently obviate all animal use. Indeed animal testing is required by regulatory authorities for all new medicines, treatments and vaccines prior to their use in humans and animals. ESLAV will promote a commitment that all animals ensured to the care of its members shall be treated as humanely as possible within the scientific context that justifies the use of a living animal
  • ESLAV will encourage all members to strive to ensure that all animals under their care are housed and cared for in compliance with international and national guidelines and provided with environmental enrichment consistent with sound scientific principles.
  • ESLAV will encourage all members to strive to ensure that no animal experiences unnecessary pain and distress. ESLAV members will use their professional knowledge to apply the use of appropriate anaesthesia and analgesia wherever this may be possible. In cases where this is not possible ESLAV members will use their professional knowledge to apply and institute a humane endpoint for each animal and at the earliest possible point in time consistent with the scientific aims of the study.

ESLAV Sponsor and Advertiser Ethical charter

  • ESLAV welcomes sponsors to the organisation. No sponsor may influence decisions made by the board of ESLAV. The board shall at all time ensure that there is no conflict of interest between any sponsoring working group or similar member and a sponsor.
  • Any sponsor may express a desire to direct its funds to be used for specific purposes within the organisation. The ESLAV board will attempt to respect this desire but reserves the right to defer from the sponsors wishes should the board feel that the sponsor’s wish is not in accordance with the best interests of the organisation. The board will communicate its decision to the sponsor. Any sponsor may then choose to withdraw support should it so desire.
  • ESLAV welcomes advertisers to “Briefing”, our website, and other publications that may be published under the aegis of the ESLAV board and its publications editor. The Editor reserves the right to refuse any advertisement should he/she conclude that the material offered for publication is not in accordance with best interests of the organisation. An example of this could be in the case of advertising specifically designed to damage a competitor’s good name and standing.
  • The ESLAV editor shall strive to ensure that linkage between advertisements and published scientific (peer reviewed or other non-commercial) content does not happen, thereby avoiding any impression of approval by ESLAV for any particular commercial product.
  • All scientific (non-commercial) content that has been sponsored by an advertiser shall clearly state that this has happened. The article shall clearly show the name and address of the sponsor.
  • In those cases where a sponsor has supported a section of an ESLAV scientific meeting, this shall be clearly stated in the program.

Brief History

The European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV) was created at the 6th FELASA Symposium held in June 1996 in Basel, Switzerland. David Whittaker from Zeneca Pharmaceuticals in the UK called this initial meeting. About 100 veterinarians from different European countries and worldwide were present. The Society is registered as a non-profit organization in France.

Objectives

The objectives of the Society are to promote and disseminate expert veterinary knowledge within the field of laboratory animal science.

The objectives are achieved through:

Meetings, lectures, discussions, and publications:

  • Annual scientific meetings are organized in conjunction with European associations around Europe
  • Semi-annual production of Briefing – the Society’s magazine

The advancement of veterinary knowledge and skills in subjects connected with the breeding, health, welfare and use of laboratory animals:

  • The society gives veterinarians a forum to discuss issues which concern us, in the field of laboratory animal science, in general and in Europe specifically. Veterinarians who work full time or part time, as consultants in this field need to keep themselves updated with regards to e.g. changing and evolving laws and regulations in Europe and in individual nations as well as world wide.
  • Active encouragement of its Members to provide training for veterinarians practicing or wishing to practice in the field of laboratory animals, both at the under- and postgraduate level

Collaboration and exchange of information with other Societies and allied scientific disciplines:

  • ESLAV and LAVA being the representative bodies for Veterinarians engaged in the use, care and medicine of animals used in research in the UK and Europe are continuously in the process of building closer links.
  • ESLAV sets the right environment and support for the activity of the European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. This College is needed to structure the additional training leading to specialization and to certify its members, and to provide assistance in ESLAV’s professional continuing education activities. In other words, the College represents the academic component in our field of laboratory animal medicine.

Read the “ESLAV-ECLAM Mutual agreement on collaboration

Representation of the veterinary “voice” at regulatory and governmental bodies:

  • Beyond the internal forum, ESLAV is the only European entity representing the veterinary profession specifically in the laboratory animal medicine field at the European decision making bodies. The need for veterinarians to participate in the running of laboratory animal facilities and ethics committees (or equivalent) is not systematically addressed (Is this still valid?). European regulations should ensure veterinary oversight of animal care and use programmes.

Annual General Meetings

General Meetings take place once a year following notification issued by the President or the Secretary by email and/or direct mailing and by posting it on the Societies web site. They are usually held during the annual scientific meeting.

Working Groups

The European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV) gives veterinarians a forum to discuss issues which concern them, in the field of laboratory animal science, in general and in Europe specifically.

ECLAM

The European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ECLAM) is a veterinary speciality organisation established within Europe for the speciality of laboratory animal medicine (LAM) and, like other veterinary specialty colleges, is overseen by the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS, http://ebvs.eu). ECLAM was founded in 2000 following an initiative of the European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians and was awarded full recognization by EBVS in 2008.
